Idea #3 You can Find Art Anywhere

a pebble in the rough
- Our group decided to frame this piece of art. Form is defined in this piece as it is framed from a small scale, it is dull, roughly textured, and simple. Rhythm is clearly achieved in this piece as the repetition of arched lines and color is evident and moving. The color remains constant throughout the piece but eventually fades into a lighter shade. As for aesthetics, this piece of art can be seen as something that is worth looking at or something that is a waste of time, depending on how an individual wants to experience this piece. To one person this can have meaning that can really have an affect on their emotions, but to a whole other person, this can be completely meaningless whether or not there is a frame around it. However, the content that our group curated behind this art piece is similar to the idea that nature can always overcome manmade structures. The intersecting lines actually come from a trashcan by the Robeks in the USU. The chemical reaction of the trashcan and elements in the air created this rustic orange brown color. The movement of the trashcan from one place to another allowed for the circles to intersect at one point. Furthermore, the black dot is dried up gum that I see as a pebble rolling down a hill. This pebble can mean different things. One can see that this little pebble is finally free after overcoming a tough obstacle and is rolling downwards towards freedom. Who knows what is ahead for its future?

framed art
This art was most likely not seen as art until we put a frame around it. To strangers walking past this without the frame, it is just dirty marks on the cement ground. Once we taped a frame around this piece, we focus on something that can have different meanings and can evoke possible emotions from strangers walking past this mark on the ground that is framed. When the rectangle is gone, the emotions fade away, the meanings disappear and this piece on the floor will most likely just be recognized as dirty circles on the ground rather than art.

Art can definitely be something other than objects. It can be paint, it can be the human body, it can be a photograph. Art comes in many forms and is not limited to just objects. Moreover, in my opinion, I feel that art resides in the body of the object and that some objects are art and some are not. You can look at a water bottle and call that art by its design and decor, but if the viewer has no emotional experience with the water bottle, then it is simply just a water bottle that is convenient for hydration. We determine that an object is art if there is meaning behind it that can draw out emotions from the viewer. If you feel something strong towards it, if you have to think about it, then it is most likely art to you. With that being said, art definitely resides in the experience of the viewer. If the viewer has no experience towards an object, a painting, a human body, “art,” then is it really art to them? Maybe not. No experience = not art.
Idea #4 Drinking and Drawing

This week’s art activity was very fun, but quite frustrating at the same time. I did not realize that sketching a tree would be so difficult! Going into this activity, I knew that the portrait of a friend was going to be the most challenging sketch for me considering my lack of artistic abilities. However, despite the fact that I did my friend dirty, the fact that I tried to draw her was an experience I do not regret because I got a couple of good laughs out of it. Overall, I enjoy the idea of drawing, it is a way of expressing emotions whether you are good at it or not. As I was sketching the trees, I was frustrated by the idea of having to draw out every leaf. Sketching my drink was not too bad, but figuring out how to draw myself holding the cup left me in awe, it was not easy at all. If I were to practice for 100 hours, 1,000 hours, or 1,000,000 hours I believe that I could get better at drawing. Everything takes practice, even drawing! My major at the moment is pre-nursing, and I believe that sketches and drawings could be super useful when I take my physiology and anatomy course. Drawing out certain organs in our body could be very helpful when it comes to studying and understanding how the body functions. I definitely believe that drawing is a language that can speak louder than words. Drawing can say something that words cannot and I think that is a very amazing thing that some people take for granted.
